中医学认为，经络在人体内循行，在体表的一些部位气血容易留滞聚集，成为穴位，穴位是针灸施治的重要位置。医者用针来聚气通经，用针来泻脏腑邪气，用针来调理阴阳表里脏腑之气，以有余补不足。医者也用灸来补阳平阴。医者也以药归经，调理脏腑阴阳。
