头皮屑是头皮表层的角质皮质细胞老化、剥落形成的，一般为薄片状。其產生的原因被認為與頭皮表皮新陳代謝速度過快有關。有頭皮屑一般會被認為是頭髮不潔，而多洗頭的確對於減少頭皮屑有所助益。
