Bûn-hoà chit sû ū Hàn-gí Bûn-giân-bûn ê sio-tùi-sû, ì-sù sī "bú", "bú-le̍k" ê tiān-tò-péng. Āu--lâi Ji̍t-pún-oē kā chioh lâi piáu-sī kīn-tāi Se-hng kultura (Eng-gí: culture) ê ì-sù. Chit ê sin ì-hân hām koè-khì ê "bûn-bú" tùi-pí bô ti̍t-chiap ê koan-hē. Liōng-kî-iok lâi kóng, bûn-hoà ē-sái chí lâng ê oa̍h-tōng. Bô sio-siâng ê tēng-gī hoán-èng bô kāng-khoán ê hun-sek bô·-sek.

UNESCO tùi bûn-hoà ê tēng-gī: "set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group". Culture encompasses "in addition to art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs".

Thong-sio̍k ê iōng-hoat tiāⁿ-tiāⁿ kā bûn-hoà chún-chò 1-khoán phêng-lūn sia-hoē, lâng-chéng, kai-chân, thoân-thé koân-kē ê kang-khū. Khó-pí kóng, ū-ê siā-hoē kho·-á jīn-ûi siau-hùi Europa Kó·-tián Im-ga̍k sī ko-sióng ê bûn-hoà hêng-ûi, pō· pin-nn̂g tō bô sǹg sī bûn-hoà.
