Insects are a group of animals with skeletons on the outside. Most insects have six legs and four wings, such as dragonflies. Insects are the biggest group of animals on earth, and there are more than 800,000 kinds (or species) of them. Insects are part of the phylum arthrapoda (arthropod). Insects are class insecta. All insects are classified by the fact that they have 3 pairs of legs, and a body segmented into a head, thorax, and abdomen, and usually have 2 pairs of wings.

Contrary to what some people believe, spiders, scorpions and similar animals are not insects, they are arachnids. Arachnids are arthropods that have 4 pairs of legs.
