Films (movies, motion pictures) use moving pictures and sound to show stories. Many people like films, in every part of the world. Films can be shown on a television, or in a cinema or movie theatre. Many films first go to the cinema screens, and are shown on television only later on.

How movies work

A screenwriter writes a script, which tells people what to say and what to do. Then a producer, who often works for a studio, hires people to work on the film. The director tells people, called actors and actresses, what to do, and a cameraman takes pictures of them. These pictures are played at movie theaters, very fast. A machine shines light through the clear film, and people sitting in a dark room see it projected on a big screen.

Genres

A genre is a special group of movies. Action movies are fast movies that are mostly about people fighting with their fists. Dramas are serious, and often about love or people dying. Comedies are funny. These are only a few of the most important kinds of movies. Some movies are in more than one genre.
