A zebra is an animal that looks like a horse in shape. It is about as big as a small horse or a large pony. But the colour is different: it has vertical stripes in black and white. Zebras are part of the group of species that are called mammals. Within the mammals they also belong to the ungulates, the animals with hooves. Zebras live in families with one male and lots of females. They can have babies (foals) when they are about five years old and can have one foal every year. Zebras mainly eat grass, but they also eat fruit, leaves and some vegetables. They always live near water.

Zebras live naturally in Africa, south of the Sahara desert. But most zoos have them as well.
