The sensory system controls the senses. The human sensory system is usually said to have five senses:

  • Hearing is the sense of sound that comes into our ears.
  • Sight is the sense of seeing things with our eyes.
  • Touch is the sense of feeling things with our skin.
  • Taste is the sense of the flavor of things with our tongues
  • Smell is the sense of smelling things with our noses.

Some would add to these a sixth Kinesthetic sense, knowing where your whole body is and where it is not, and a seventh, the immune system's ability to detect invading virus and bacteria.

Memory is sometimes listed as an eighth sense, although it seems not to detect things from outside, but reconstruct them from inside the brain, and sometimes from muscle memory.

The term "sixth sense" is used to mean empathy or telepathy.
