A country get its independence when it is no longer part of another country. Sometimes countries get their indepencence in a war, like the American War of Independence or the countries of former Yugoslavia, and sometimes countries get their independence peacefully. Sometimes intervention (help) from another country is needed to get independence, like in World War II, when the allies (like the United States, England and the Soviet Union) liberated countries that were occupied by Hitler's nazi-germany. The country that got its independence most recently is East Timor. In May 2002 it became independent from Indonesia.
