Horse riding is a popular sport in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Horses are ridden in events such as jumping, dressage, stockwork, and pleasure riding.

Show Jumping

Show Jumping is where a rider rides a horse over a set course of horse jumps. There are many types of horse jumps such as the double oxer, triple oxer, gaits, stone wall, cross bars, calvettis, and cross country jumps. It is not possible to jump in the high cathegories with every breed of horse, as it's the same with "horse racing" and "pulling wagons". The small thin horses, especially the Thoroughbred, are mainly used in racing, dressage and jumping. On these horses sides, you can count every rib and you can see all the muscles and bones moving. Their caracter is very wild, jumpy, nervous and timid. These horses are just for people who know how to handle difficult horses. However all their qualities are nessecary to win a race. A horse used to pull a wagon is bigger and heavier than the Thoroughbreds. They have a wider breast, so that they are able to pull the wagons. The hoofs are also much larger than the cute ones of a racing horse. Every quality of this type of horse (= heavy horse), stands in opposition to the Arabian. This is also for the chracter: The large horses are calm, trustworthy and good-natured.Types of heavy horses are: Belgians, Shires, Clydesdale, Friesian horse, and Gypsy Vanners. Also a beginner is able to communicate with these well tempered horses. The most see horses in competitions of show jumping are a mixture of the two types of horses described before. Both characters and qualities like the fastness of the "Arabian" and the force of the "heavy horse" are importent to ride a course without mistakes. You've also got your all-around horses, such as Morgans and Quarter Horses, who can do anything!

Dressage

Dressage is a bit more showy than jumping, and it is when a rider shows the judges what he or she can do with their horse. There is usually a set course that they have to complete. They have to navigate between letters which are the markers used to specify a certain area of the arena. To do this, you must show no movements between your body and the horse.

Stockwork

Stockwork is when a horse is ridden on a farm or ranch to round up cows, sheep, or other horses. (Example: cutting).

Pleasure riding

Pleasure riding is all of the above, but also anything else that people do for enjoyment while they are riding, such as going on a trail ride or something.
