Area is the amount of space a two dimensional (flat) object takes up. It is useful because it is how much of a material you need to make an empty object, for example how much wood you need to make a wardrobe.

Different shapes have different ways to find the area.

• Area of a rectangle is the length of any two adjacent sides multiplied together.
• Area of a triangle is half of the base multiplied by the perpendicular height. You can find this using the trigonometry formula, A=1/2 abSin C.
• Area of a circle: $A=pi*r^2$.

The area under a curve can be found using integration, from calculus.
