An accident is something going wrong. Physical accidents are things like collisions, injuries, and falling. Non-physical accidents are things like accidentally telling someone a secret, forgetting something important, or deleting an important computer file.
Often, accidents are investigated so that we can learn how to avoid them in the future.
An accident at work is defined as an external, sudden and violent event. Work accidents happen while an employee is working. It causes injury or the death of the employee.
For an accident to be a work accident, there must be a direct or indirect relationship of cause and effect between the accident and the work.
Many accidents happen in the merchant marine.
A bicycle accident happens when a bicycle ride goes wrong. A bicycle can fall over because of a loss of balance, or running into something.
In 1842, an accident happened that is the first bicycle accident. Kirkpatrick McMillan, the inventor of the velocipede (an early bicycle), rode his newly invented bicycle for 40 miles (64 km) from his home to Glasgow. When he arrived at the city, many people gathered on the road and Kirkpatrick hit a young girl.
Although she was not injured badly, he was charged with causing the first-ever bicycle accident. The judge could not believe Kirkpatrick had travelled the 40 miles to Glasgow in only five hours, but after much explaining, he was allowed to return home.
