Naucratis werd rond circa 630 v. Chr. als eerste Griekse handelskolonie gesticht onder de 26ste dynastie in Egypte. Haar stichters waren Ionische huurlingen die deze gunst van de Egyptische farao Psamtik I ontvingen, na bewezen diensten.
