Het cytoplasma is het plasma in een cel.

In het cytoplasma zit de kern, die gebruik maakt van het plasma om stoffen uit te wisselen. Het cytoplasma tezamen met de kern heet het protoplasma.

Het plasma wordt bij elkaar gehouden door het celmembraan, dat ervoor zorgt dat het niet vrij het lichaam instroomt.

Er bevinden zich allerlei stoffen in het plasma zoals eiwitdraden en ribosomen waaruit het RNA uit wordt opgebouwd. Ook bevinden zich er energiestoffen zoals glucose. Verder bevat het aminozuren, suikers en eiwitten.

Het cytoplasma bestaat voor 60 tot 95% uit water. Bij plantaardige cellen kan dat zelfs 98% zijn.

In het cytoplasma zitten mitochondriën, waarin zich ook erfelijk materiaal bevindt.
