요괴의 형태는 동물, 유령 또는 여러 실제적인 형태의 혼합형태로 나타난다. 요괴는 신화나 우화 또는 동화에 등징한다. 그리스신화의 미노타우로스나 퀴클롭스나 켄타우로스를 예로서 들 수 있다. 우리나라의 대표적인 요괴로는 도깨비를 들 수 있다.
