胡は、漢民族が、中国の北部や西部の異民族（とくに遊牧民族）を卑しんで呼んだ言葉である。また「胡瓜」（きゅうり）のように、これらの異民族由来のものである事を示す用法もある。

もともとの意味は、「あごひげ」が長い人である。
