恒星の周囲を公転する惑星の公転軌道は楕円形を描き、恒星はこの楕円形の一つの中心に位置する。このため、恒星と惑星との間の距離は常に変動することになる。

この軌道中で、恒星と惑星との距離が最も近くなる点を近日点（きんじつてん）という。

太陽を挟んで遠日点の反対側にある。
