Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston (Newark, New Jersey, USA, 9 agosto 1963) è una cantante americana.

Figlia della cantante gospel Cissy e cugina della celebre Dionne Warwick, la giovane Whitney, dopo un periodo come modella, balzò alla notorietà musicale mondiale grazie al suo album d'esordio del 1985 intitolato Whitney Houston entrato direttamente al numero 1 della classifica americana, permanendovi per 14 settimane consecutive ed entrando nel Guinness dei Primati come album più venduto di una cantante esordiente.

Due anni dopo torna con Whitney e nel 1990 con I'm your baby tonight, ma il successo planetario si cementa nel 1992 con il film The Bodyguard, interpretato con Kevin Costner, e grazie al singolo 'I will always love you', remake di un pezzo di Dolly Parton. La colonna sonora del film vende 37 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo.

Dopo altri film interpretati da protagonista, Whitney lancia nel 1998 il suo quarto album My love is your love, con la hit-single Heartbreak Hotel insieme alle "soulsisters" Faith Evans e Kelly Price.

Nel 2000 è tempo di the greatest hits, mentre il successivo Just Whitney arriva nel 2002.

L'anno successivo, come Toni Braxton, anche Whitney decide di lanciare un album natalizio sotto il nome the holiday album.

Nel 2004 sono state rese note diverse notizie sconcertanti su di lei, sulle violenze del marito Bobby Brown e dei suoi problemi di droga con i conseguenti ricoveri all'alba del 2005.

L'estate dello stesso anno, il produttore Clive Davis ha fatto sapere che Whitney sta bene e che sta registrando nuovi pezzi per il suo prossimo album che vedrà la luce verso la fine del 2006.

Whitney Houston ha venduto 170 milioni di dischi ed è l'unica artista femminile ad avere due album fra i primi 35 più venduti negli Stati Uniti. Ha vinto 21 American Music Awards (un record come cantante solista).
