Satelit komunikasi adalah sebuah satelit buatan yang ditempatkan di angkasa dengan tujuan telekomunikasi. Satelit komunikasi modern menggunakan orbit geosynchronous, orbit Molniya atau orbit Bumi rendah.

Untuk pelayanan tetap, satelit komunikasi menyediakan sebuah teknologi tambahan bagi kabel komunikasi kapal selam optik fiber. Untuk aplikasi bergerak, seperti komunikasi ke kapal laut dan pesawat terbang, di mana aplikasi teknologi lain, seperti kabel, tidak praktis atau tidak mungkin.
