Varsinainen hermo muodostuu aksonien eli hermosyiden muodostamista hermosyykimpuista. Hermot voivat olla metrinkin mittaisia ja suurimmat hermot erottuvat jopa paljaalla silmällä. Hermoja kulkee kaikkialla elimistössä ja suurin osa soluista on jollakin tavalla yhteydessä ainakin yhteen hermoon.
