xine (officially pronounced *, like the name "Maxine" without "Ma") is a multimedia playback engine for Unix-like operating systems released under the GNU General Public License. It can play CDs, DVDs, and Video CDs, as well as common computer multimedia formats like AVI, WMV, MOV, MP3, FLAC, Theora, Speex, and Vorbis.

xine is built as a shared library (xine-lib) that supports different frontend player applications. To decode multimedia data xine uses libraries from the FFmpeg project or binary codecs.

A nice feature of xine during playback of videos is the ability to manually correct the synchronization of audio and video if video is ahead of audio or vice versa. This is a common problem with recordings on a PC that is too busy to access the recording data or that uses different clocks for audio and video data (e.g. when recording video from a TV tuner card but audio from the sound card). So even broken recordings that are unbearable to watch in other media players can easily be viewed with xine.
