The winter flounder is the most common of the shallow water flounders along the North American Atlantic Coast. Pseudopleuronectes americanus spends the summer off shore in deeper waters, and winters in coastal estuaries rivers and bays. The Winter Flounder is highly regarded for their delicious white meat. Other common names of the winter flounder are "black back" and "lemon sole." The ranger of the winter flounder is from Southern Labrador down to Georgia. However it is most abundant from Newfoundland down through Maryland.
