Webmonkey is a popular online tutorial website comprised of various articles on building webpages from backend to frontend. They cover many aspects of developing on the web like programming, database, multimedia, and setting up web storefronts. The content presented is much like Wired Magazine but for learning to design web content. Webmonkey is not only geared towards the geeks but a great introduction to new internet users interested in the underlying technologies of the web.
Webmonkey was closed in February 2004 following a round of layoffs in the U.S. division of its parent company, Terra Lycos. It was reopened later in February 2006. As of July 2006, there is news that Webmonkey will once again be shut down for the third time.
Webmonkey is also used to refer to web monkey, a term for an amateur web designer.
