Trophic hormones are hormones that regulate the activity of various endocrine glands. One example is the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which is produced by the anterior pituitary gland and induces the production of Thyroid hormone (TH, or thyroxine) by the thyroid gland. It is the thyroid hormone that actually causes metabolic changes in the human body, in this case to increase metabolic rate and body temperature.

Trophic hormones made and secreted by the anterior pituitary include TSH, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
