The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) - a United States governmental agency - has specific designations for aircraft categories. Among these are: normal, utility, acrobatic, commuter, manned free balloon, special classes and transport. Each of the aforementioned aircraft categories must comply with FAA-mandated standards in order to be granted an air worthiness certificate. The air worthiness certificate is required in order for the aircraft to be operated. Transport category aircraft standards are spelled out in Federal Aviation Regulations Part 25.
