Transmutation of species refers to the altering of one species into another. Transmutation can occur via degeneration (i.e., migration and changes in climate). Modern evolutionary theory accounts for this using evolutionary processes, however before the establishment of modern evolutionary biology, it was recognised by some that species changed.
