Tlatoani (plural tlatoque) is a Nahuatl word referring to the ruler of a Pre-Columbian central Mexican city-state such as Tenochtitlan or Texcoco. Tlatoani literally means "speaker" and is often used to refer to the so-called Aztec "emperor", the Hueyi Tlatoani (literally "great speaker").
