A tergum (pl. terga) or tergite is the dorsal portion (or sclerite) of an insect segment. The anterior edge is called the base and posterior edge is called the apex or margin. In a thoracic segment, the tergum is called the notum.

The ventral portion of a segment is called the sternum.
