Tenesmus is the constant feeling of the need to empty the bowel, accompanied by pain, cramping, and involuntary straining efforts.

"Vesical tenesmus" is a similar condition, referring to the failed attempts to urinate.

"Rectal tenesmus" is sometimes used as a retronym to clarify the context when both forms of tenesmus are referenced.

Tenesmus is characterized by a sensation of needing to pass stool, accompanied by pain, cramping, and straining. Despite straining, little stool is passed.
