A tank truck is a motor vehicle designed to carry liquefied loads or cargo on roadways. It is normally used to deliver gasoline to gas stations. It is also called a Gas Truck. The largest tank trucks are similar to railroad tank cars which are also designed to carry liquefied loads. Many variants exist due to the wide variety of liquids that can be transported. Tank trucks can be large or small, insulated or non-insulated, pressurized or non-pressurized, and designed for single or multiple loads.
A tank truck is often distinguished by its shape, usually a cylindrical tank upon the vehicle lying horizontally. A common tank truck may be used say, to carry water. Then, the distinctions are less obvious. A water truck for filling swimming pools would have fewer regulations than a water truck being used to supply drinking water and may be built of different material. Thus, some of the other less visible distinctions amongst tank trucks are their intended use: compliance with human food regulations, refrigeration capability, acid resistance, pressurization capability, and (other).
Another small tank truck may be used to deliver (liquified) LPG to households. These trucks usually carry about 1000 gals (4000 liters) of Liquified Petroleum Gas under pressure for delivery to households. Usually the truck itself is fueled by the very same LPG in its cargo and thus gathers an efficiency by not requiring two fuel tanks.
