Surigical lubricants are substances used by health care providers to provide lubrication and lessen discomfort to the patient during certain medical/surgical procedures (per vaginal examination/per rectal examination).

K-Y Jelly was initially used as a medical/surgical lubricant before it gained popularity as a personal lubricant.

Currently a variety of non-irritating substances are used as medical/surgical lubricants. A prime example is Lignocaine gel containing the local anaesthetic lignocaine.
