A starship class is the basic design of a starship. In most navies, a ship's class (by tradition) is named after its first ship, known as the lead or class ship.
Classes of starships, like their naval counterparts, are used to save effort and money - it's considerably easier and cheaper to build multiple units to the same design than to develop a unique plan for every individual starship. It also simplifies maintenance, training, and procurement of spares (not inconsiderable factors for any service).
Unclassified vessel types:
The Freespace universe contains a large number of starships and spaceships. This list focuses primarily on larger inter-system ships (Corvette or larger). For a complete listing of all ships, refer to List of Ships in the Freespace Universe
Military spaceships in Gundam are not actually starships, every Gundam series takes place wholly within the Solar System.
In Halo, FTL (faster-than-light) travel is used by UNSC starships with Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace engines. The Covenant use an unknown form of Slipspace propulsion.
