A specialist is a person who is able to solve some predefined class of problems. Usually, specialists are officially recognized by different authorities composed of recognized experts.
In the context of medicine, a specialist is a physician with a specialization in a specific branch, as opposed to a general practitioner (GP), sometimes known as a family practitioner (e.g. a neurologist or endocrinologist). At the New York Stock Exchange a specialist is a trader who makes a market in one or several stocks and holds the limit order book for those stocks.
