Sententiae are statements from ancient sources that are used isolated from the rest of the text. This is a tool of scholasticism, which was popular in the Middle Ages as a form of rhetoric. This tool was used greatly by St. Augustine, or Augustine of Hippo to convince the Church to implement rhetoric (which was considered illegal because it was connected to an illegal pagan religion) into its teaching methods.
