Sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle most commonly found in modern (particularly Western) cultures. It is characterized by sitting or inactivity for most of the day (for example, in an office or at home). It is believed to be a factor in obesity and other disorders, primarily heart disease.
In biology, this term is used to denote organisms (usually animals) that do not routinely move and remain at a single location (permanently fixed or otherwise). Examples include organisms such as barnacles, corals and mussels. By this stricter definition, humans do not qualify as truly "sedentary".
