A screen or a pick in basketball is an offensive tactic to block the path of a defender to free up a teammate for scoring opportunities. A player may use his body to screen but not his arms or legs. He also may not move while setting the screen, otherwise it is called a moving screen and an automatic offensive foul.
A screen can be used to free a teammate with or without the ball. A common tactic of a screen for the ballhandler is the pick and roll.
