In sports
A red card is used in many sports as a means of indicating that a player has received a certain level of punishment, typically that they have been expelled from the game.
- Football (soccer) : The player is "sent off" for the rest of the match, and may not be replaced. See misconduct (football) for more details.
- Volleyball, futsal, handball, rugby union, rugby league (Britain only), International rules football, water polo, and field hockey : The player is ejected.
- Fencing : A touch is awarded to the offending fencer's opponent; the fencing equivalent to football's red card is the black card.
- Mixed martial arts promotion PRIDE : A 10% deduction of the guilty fighter's fight purse (only used when fights are conducted under PRIDE's Bushido rules).
