Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of flowering plants. The genus is very well known especially for the South African species: the South African (English) name is "sugarbush". In South Africa they are prominent in the fynbos region.

Within the large family Proteaceae, they are a member of the subfamily Proteoideae, which has both southern African and Australian members.
