Prickly ash in most cases refers to either

• Aralia spinosa or
• Zanthoxylum americanum.

There are numerous other types of prickly ash within both genera, Aralia and Zanthoxylum. Sichuan Pepper (Zanthoxylum seed, or the plant) is commonly referred to as “Chinese prickly ash” or “prickly ash peel”.
