The planetary core consists of the innermost layers of a planet.

It can be liquid or solid, depending on factors such as the planet's size, age, composition and its proximity to its star. Earth's core is partially liquid, whilst the core of Mars is thought to be solid, especially since much of its magnetic field has been stripped away. The reason for this theory is that a liquid core generates a magnetic field.
