A pier and beam foundation is a foundation type most often used in construction before 1970, although its use continues in some custom construction.

Construction method

Piers are driven into the soil underneath a building at depths from 12 to 15 feet supporting wooden beams (most often sized 4 feet by 6 feet) that in turn support the floorboards of a building. This type of foundation results in crawlspace underneath the foundation in which wiring and ductwork can be laid during construction or remodeling. Slab-on-grade foundations replaced pier and beam foundations in most construction.
