A picture book is a popular form of illustrated literature—more precisely, a book with pictures in it—popularized in the 20th century Western world. Picture books are normally aimed at young children. Picture books commonly have watercolor or pencil drawings and have very basic language especially designed to help children develop their reading skills. Sometimes, the author and illustrator may be two different persons, but often the author also produces the illustrations himself. Some of the most well-known picture books include Make Way for Ducklings, Anansi the Spider, and Peter Rabbit. The Caldecott Medal is given each year to the illustrator of the best American picture book of that year.
