The term penetration can mean several things:

  • In business, penetration is often short for market penetration, the degree to which a product or service is known and/or used among potential customers.
  • For weapons, penetration (weapons) refers to the ability to pierce the target's armor or other protection; higher penetration means that it is more likely to pierce strong defenses.
    • For missiles, penetration can also refer to the ability to reach the target, including avoiding being destroyed by defense measures; for this purpose penetration aids (penaids for short) are applied, see e.g. flight phases of ICBMs; see also countermeasure.
  • In sexology, sexual penetration is the penetration of an orifice as part of a sexual act
  • For meanings in telecommunications, see penetration (telecommunications)
  • In music, see Penetration (band)
  • In basketball, penetration refers to the ability of a perimeter player (such as Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs) to drive through the opposing defense and get near the basket.
  • In warfare, Penetration (warfare) is a strategic manover.
