The optic disc or optic nerve head is the point in the eye where the optic nerve fibres leave the retina; it is not sensitive to light and thus is also known as "the blind spot" or "anatomical blind spot". Inspection of the optic disc by ophthalmoscopy can give an indication of glaucoma and other optic neuropathies, optic neuritis, or papilledema (i.e. optic disc swelling produced by raised intracranial pressure). The break in the visual field created by the optic disk is also called the blind spot.
