Northern Italy encompasses eight of the country's 20 regions. The Lega Nord, an Italian political party led by Umberto Bossi, proposed the independence of Northern Italy under the name Padania.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-South Tyrol and Aosta Valley are regions with a special statute.
