Mutual masturbation is a sexual act where two or more people stimulate themselves or one another sexually, usually with the hands.
This may be done in situations where the participants do not feel physically able (or that it is socially appropriate) to have full sexual intercourse, but still wish to have a mutual sexual act. It is also done as part of the full repertoire of sexual intercourse, where it may be used as an interlude, a form of foreplay or simply as an alternative activity to insertion. In some people, it is the primary sexual activity of choice above all others because it enables the individuals to see face to face and leaves the hands free to caress, as seen in frottage (see below). Mutual masturbation can be practiced by people of all sexual orientations. If used as an alternative to penile-vaginal penetration, the aim may be to preserve female virginity or to prevent pregnancy.
The techniques of mutual masturbation resemble those of simple masturbation, with the exception another person is involved. The range of techniques can be as simple as two people masturbating in the same room at the same time without touching one another to a group of people all stimulating one another. In the case of two people, one may stimulate their partner, each partner may stimulate the other, or one may stimulate both themselves and their partner. Between two men the latter is possible with only one man's hand, if a wide enough grip is used around both penises.
Mutual masturbation may or may not result in one or more of the partners achieving orgasm. If no bodily fluids are exchanged (as is common), mutual masturbation is a form of safer sex, and greatly reduces the risk of transmission of sexual diseases. As such it was encouraged among gay men by some safer sex organisations in the wake of the AIDS, originally called GRID (gay related intestinal/immunodeficiency disease), scare of the 1980s, as an alternative to anal or oral sex.
A modern dancing style which involves partners rubbing their clothed bodies on one another is called "grinding," "freaking," and in Caribbean cultures where it is more accepted, it is referred to as "whining" or "flexing", known in the Spanish speaking territories as "perrear" (a sort of verb-form of the Spanish word for dog.) Much of West Indian music (esp. Jamaican Dancehall and Trinidad and Tobago's SOCA) makes frequent references to this style of dance. There are even dance competitions held in recognition of this.
Sometimes this may be in the form of a game. Participants may masturbate themselves in a challenge to see who can ejaculate first and be declared the winner. Other times, one is to masturbate his opponent and the one who ejaculates first is instead declared the loser and may have to eat the other's semen. Other competitive games include who can ejaculate the most semen, who can ejaculate the farthest, or simply who has the largest penis.
A circle jerk sometimes involves a contest to see who can ejaculate first on a piece of bread or biscuit. The last to ejaculate may be forced to eat the semen soaked biscuit, commonly called "cummy biscuit", a "limp biscuit" or, more commonly, a "soggy biscuit". In Australia, the term "soggy sao" is also used, referring to the popular biscuit produced by Arnott's. This is often an urban legend associated with fraternity initiation of pledges. Among adolescents, or men with adolescent sensibilities, there may also be a cash prize for the victor, from a collected "kitty."
An alternate form of this is called a line jerk, where two or more men are standing in a line masturbating each other, either facing one another or not facing one another.
An alternative to a line jerk is called a "reach round", where two men stand in line front to back and the man at the back reaches round to masturbate the other while "grinding" his own erection into the vertical crease of the others buttocks as a prelude or alternative to anal penetration.
The term is sometimes used as a dysphemism for an oligarchy, or a system believed to be under oligarchical rule.
The Dazz Band's song Joystick is notable for having lyrics that metaphor mutual masturbation.
