Municipal solid waste (MSW) includes household and commercial wastes generated in a municipal or notified areas. They are in either solid or semisolid form and generally exclude industrial hazardous wastes.

There are four broad categories of MSW:

• Biodegradable waste: food & kitchen waste, garden wastes, street sweepings etc. These are all wastes.
• Recyclable material: paper, glass, bottles, cans, metals, certain ^*s, etc.
• Inert waste: construction waste, dirt, rocks, debris.
• Composite wastes: Waste clothing, Tetra Paks
• Domestic hazardous waste & toxic waste: medication, paints, chemicals, light bulbs, spray cans, fertilizer and pesticide containers, batteries, shoe polish, etc.
