Minimum Gauge Railways are narrow gauge railways that run on extremely narrow gauged rail tracks, below 2 ft (61 cm). The most common minimum gauges are 15 inch (381 mm), 18 inch (457 mm), 40 cm (15.75") and 50 cm (19 11/16"). The notion of minimum gauge railways was originally developed by Sir Arthur Heywood in the 1870s for estate railways and by the French company of Decauville for industrial railways.
