The superior surface of the liver is attached to the diaphragm and anterior abdominal wall by a triangular or falciform fold of peritoneum, the falciform ligament. The ligamentum teres is in the free margin of falciform ligament.
It inserts around the umbilicus and is an important landmark of the inner surface of the anterior abdominal wall. Its embryologic origin is the left umbilical vein.
