A Hammer toe deformity describes the effects of osteoarthritis in the proximal interphalangeal joints of the lesser toes. The toe joint can no longer straighten and the toe is bent downward.
Normally it affects the second toe but can arise in the other small toes. The most common cause is subluxation of the metatarsal phalangeal joints caused by compensation for an unstable * foot. Hammer toes are found in conjunction with Hallux Abducto Valgus (deformity of the great toe).
