There are several meanings of the term Grounding:

• Grounding is also used to describe the connection of part of an electrical circuit to an electrical ground.

• A grounding can also mean a low but general level of knowledge or understanding, such as in the phrase "A basic grounding in a subject".
• in cognition and artificial intelligence symbol grounding (SG, or symbol grounding problem SGP) refers to how people represent knowledge about concepts. Modern theories of cognition propose that cognition is grounded in experiences, and a major challenge to artificial intelligence is how a computers representation can similarly be grounded.

• Used when establishing ground truth.
• Grounding can also mean returning to a fully-conscious state after an esoteric or psychedelic experience.
• "Grounding" in spiritual experience can mean a living energetic connection between person/space/thing and the earth; necessary for: sustaining authentic presence, and experiencing emotional and spiritual safety.

• Grounding may describe the act of a ship colliding with ground that is too shallow beneath the surface of the water. Such a ship is said to have "run aground".
• A ground stop, when a plane is grounded (which means it can't take off and therefore must stay on the ground).
• Grounding may refer to the situation where one or more airline's fleets are kept on ground, on one or more airports. This can be because of government action (as the FAA grounded all civilian flights between 11th and 13th of September 2001), or because the airline is facing liquidation (as all Swissair flights were grounded in 2001).

• Grounding is a common punishment for children or teenagers. In some cases it is suggested as an alternative to corporal punishment in the home. Typically a young person who is grounded is forbidden from leaving the home, except for attending school or college. Occasionally it can be combined with the withdrawal of privileges like use of television, telephone or computer games. This usage appears to have come from the aviation usage below:
